Join Us

Do you like being outside?  Are you looking for a meaningful challenge beyond that prison you call your job?  Stafford County Volunteer Ground Search and Rescue needs you!  Download an application (at right) and contact our membership coordinator at:  tmayberry@staffordvgsar.org.

Feel free to drop by our training and admin meeting the fourth Wednesday of every month, 7pm to 9pm, located at the Ford T. Humphrey Public Safety Building (Stafford Sheriff's Office),
1225 Courthouse Road, Stafford, Virginia 22555.  Rooms can change and meetings may be rescheduled due to holidays, work conflicts, etc, so please contact a team member to confirm a meeting.

We also recommend downloading our prospective member packet to get a better idea of what is involved in being a member of VGSAR.  What follows is a brief list some highlights of membership as well as some things to consider.
  • When you apply, you are actually applying to become a Stafford Sheriff's Office volunteer.  Your application will be reviewed by the Sheriff's Office and you will have to pass a brief background investigation.  Sins of the past may be forgivable and will be addressed on a case by case basis.

  • New members must pass a brief inspection to ensure they have the required equipment.

  • New members are expected to seek a position at the VDEM Ground SAR College Field Team Member course.  While awaiting a slot at the FTM course, members are expected to begin developing the basic skills necessary to operate as a team member.  Training is held monthly, but individual study will be necessary.

  • All personal equipment costs as well as costs of travel to VDEM training and callouts (responses to a search emergencies) are born by the member.
